LED Flicker in Private Cinemas

LED Flicker in Private Cinemas

Invisible until it is not.

Understand flicker, modulation and camera interaction before a driver or dimming protocol is locked into the design.

Flicker has several forms

Visible flicker is obvious, but higher-frequency modulation can also create stroboscopic effects during eye movement or banding on phone cameras. Susceptibility varies between people, and low dimming levels can expose behaviour that is absent at full output.

Measure the real operating state

A full-output test is not enough. Evaluate the source at every important scene level and during fades. If the cinema will be photographed or filmed, include the intended camera frame rates and shutter settings in the test.

Do not diagnose by brand name

The same LED tape can behave differently with another driver, and the same control protocol can produce different results with another luminaire. Treat flicker performance as a property of the complete tested system rather than one isolated component.

Good cinema lighting gives the room exactly enough information—and no more.

A practical specification sequence

Define the visual intent and the scene in which the light will operate. Confirm the fitting, driver, control method, circuit and physical access together. Build a representative mock-up where the detail is sensitive, then commission the final level from every seating position with the projection system running.
