Choose the control language before the fittings.

A practical guide to common dimming methods and where each can—or cannot—serve a private cinema.

Phase-cut is simple, not universal

Forward- and reverse-phase dimming can be practical for suitable loads and retrofit conditions, but performance depends heavily on the driver and minimum load. Confirm the required phase type, tested compatibility and achievable low end before procurement.

Analogue and digital control differ

0–10V separates the dimming signal from mains switching and is widely supported, but wiring topology and true switch-off still need attention. DALI provides addressable digital control and feedback options, while DMX is powerful for dynamic colour effects but usually needs careful integration into residential scene control.

Choose before cabling

Protocol affects cable routes, panel hardware, driver selection, addressing and commissioning. The safest sequence is to define scenes and zones, select compatible fittings and drivers, then lock the control architecture before electrical drawings are issued.

Good cinema lighting gives the room exactly enough information—and no more.

A practical specification sequence

Define the visual intent and the scene in which the light will operate. Confirm the fitting, driver, control method, circuit and physical access together. Build a representative mock-up where the detail is sensitive, then commission the final level from every seating position with the projection system running.
